Oil Palm Biomass is a popular renewable energy fuel in Southeast Asia. The abundance of palm shell biomass resources is due to the rapid development of the palm oil industry in Indonesia. There is a surplus in the palm oil value chain because this product utilization is still relatively low. 

Palm shells are a fibrous material and easy to handle until the product is ready to be marketed. In the making process of palm shells, there are large and small fragments mixed with dust and fibers. The palm shell water content is low (11% – 13%) compared to other biomass residues from different sources.

Palm shells contain residues from the heat-suitable portion of palm oil with slightly higher values than most lignocellulosic biomass. If compared with other biomass residue industries, palm shells are a good quality fuel with uni size, easy to destroy, and have a fast combustion process due to the low humidity levels. The fibers and shells produced by palm oil are generally used as fuel for steam boilers. The steam produced is used to run turbines that generate electricity. The two fuels are capable of producing more than enough energy to meet the energy needs of the palm oil mill.

The palm shells demand has increased rapidly in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, which resulted in a decrease in coal demand. Currently, the cement industry uses palm shells to replace coal due to the CDM benefits. Oil palm shells as a biomass resource become alternative energy when coal prices rise and the supply depletes. Of course, if it is processed properly, then the smoke from the burning can be made more environmentally friendly.

The shell, better known as the oil palm shell, contains many extraordinary components, starting from a moist water content, minimal ash intensity, high evaporation rate, up to the active carbon content. So do not be surprised if palm shell is widely used as an alternative fuel. However, palm shell utilization focused on alternative biomass.
